Andrea Sutcliffe responds to the PSA publication ‘Learning from Covid-19, a study of the actions taken by regulators in the first phase of the pandemic to July 2020'

Responding to today’s publication from the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), ‘Learning from Covid-19, a study of the actions taken by regulators in the first phase of the pandemic to July 2020’, Andrea Sutcliffe CBE, Chief Executive and Registrar for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) said:

“I’m proud and grateful for the way everyone at the NMC met the challenges of the last year so we could support nursing and midwifery professionals across the UK in their extraordinary response to Covid-19.

“The PSA report helpfully explores how we and other regulators adapted to rapidly changing circumstances in the early stages of the pandemic to ensure our responsibilities to protect the public and support our registrants were maintained and appropriately modified.

“There’s much to be proud of – we set up our temporary register from scratch in record speed; introduced emergency education standards; created our coronavirus hub of helpful information and guidance; worked collaboratively with other professional regulators and nursing and midwifery leaders and used our insight and voice to highlight key issues.

“Our own learning has identified many positives across key areas of our regulatory work that will continue and have lasting benefits beyond the pandemic. There’s certainly more to do, especially in tackling the backlog of fitness to practise cases that has built up and ensuring our focus on public engagement is thoroughly embedded in all our work.

“As we look to the future, I’m confident our focus on regulate, support and influence will continue to ensure nurses, midwives and nursing associates deliver the safe, kind and effective care the public deserves.”
