Shaping the future consultation
Consultation on draft strategic themes
Throughout 2019 we involved thousands of people in shaping our five-year strategy to support the delivery of excellent nursing and midwifery.
We held a public consultation between 24 July and 16 October 2019 to get your views on what our priorities should be over the next five years.
We're hugely grateful to all those who participated.
What we consulted on
We consulted on five main strategic themes that emerged from our early engagement.
The emerging themes were:
- Dynamic approach to shaping practice
- Strengthening the relationship with our professions
- Using and sharing research, data and intelligence
- Closer collaboration with others
- Building our relationship with the public

Most responses received were from people on our register, but we also heard from people using services, patients and members of the public, partner organisations and our NMC colleagues.
In addition, in 2019 we conducted audience research and stakeholder research to find out what our registrants, the public, partners, and our NMC colleagues expect from health and care and us as a professional regulator.
What are the next steps?
Our Council approved our strategy at its meeting in March 2020 and we published it on 29 April 2020.
