Accountability to the Health Select Committee
The Health Select Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the policy, administration and expenditure of the Department of Health and associated bodies. Eleven MPs are members of the committee.
Since 2011, the committee has held annual accountability hearings with us. We welcome the committee’s scrutiny of our work and take its recommendations seriously. In addition to giving spoken evidence, we provide written evidence on our progress in response to its accountability hearings as well as to the committee’s other inquiries.
Accountability hearings
2015 accountability hearing
The committee held its 2015 accountability hearing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on 13 January 2015. Dame Janet Finch, Chair, and Jackie Smith, Chief Executive and Registrar, gave oral evidence to the committee.
2013 accountability hearing
On 8 October 2013, Mark Addison, Chair, and Jackie Smith, Chief Executive and Registrar, gave oral evidence to the committee.
On 18 December 2013, the committee published its report making 24 recommendations on matters including clearing the backlog of outstanding cases, legislative change to streamline fitness to practise processes, our accountability and our fees.
On 27 March 2014, the Department of Health published its response to the committee’s recommendations.
On 31 March 2014, the committee published our response to the recommendations.
2012 accountability hearing
On 16 October 2012, Mark Addison, Chair, and Jackie Smith, Chief Executive and Registrar, gave oral evidence to the committee.
On 6 March 2013, the committee published its report, making 22 recommendations on matters including prioritising core functions, fitness to practise, historic cases, financial planning, information technology and leadership.
On 12 July 2013, the committee published the Government’s and our response to the recommendations.
2011 accountability hearing
On 14 June 2011, Professor Dickon Weir-Hughes, Chief Executive and Registrar; Dr Katerina Kolyva, Assistant Director for Nursing and Midwifery Policy and Jackie Smith, Director of Fitness to Practise, gave oral evidence to the committee.
On 26 July 2011, the committee published its report, making 26 recommendations on matters including fitness to practise, revalidation of nurses, proactive regulation and the future of regulation.
On 7 March 2012, the committee published the government and NMC responses to the recommendations.
