Midwifery Committee
Role and membership
The NMC recently changed the way in which it regulates midwives. As part of this, the statutory requirement to have a Midwifery Committee has been removed. We are continuing to ensure midwifery has a strong voice within the NMC.
Until March 2017, the Midwifery Committee advised the Council on:
- any matter affecting midwifery, such as policy issues affecting midwifery practice, education and statutory supervision of midwives,
- responding to policy trends,
- research, and
- ethical issues affecting all registrants.
The Midwifery Committee’s recommendations and subsequent Council decisions influenced midwifery development in the UK, which affects the lives of individual women and their families under the care of UK midwives.
