Ian Costello
Charge nurse, registered mental health nurse and registered nursing associate
What does being a nursing associate mean to you?
‘Becoming a nursing associate was one of my proudest achievements. It meant that I could deliver safe and effective care autonomously and working in partnership with registered nurses.’
What’s been your most rewarding moment as a registered nursing associate?
‘My trust, which provides mental health and learning disabilities care, recognised the unique skills that I had as a nursing associate and redeployed me to areas where patients’ physical health was compromised by COVID-19.’
How did you find the transition from nursing associate to registered nurse?
‘The nursing associate programme and role made me the best registered nurse I can be today, and that means achieving great outcomes in partnership with patients and ensuring that all elements to the person's health and wellbeing are equal.’
