Our approach to engagement

By enabling people and communities to shape what we do, we can make sure the way we regulate is rooted in people’s needs and experiences – so we’re better placed to protect the public and inspire confidence in nursing and midwifery.

We will ensure that diverse voices and experiences shape our understanding of the issues around practice learning, of people’s needs and expectations, and ensuring any changes we make will benefit the public and people receiving care.

Independent steering group

Professor Alex McMahon, the former Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for Scotland, has been appointed as Chair of the independent steering group for our review of nursing and midwifery practice learning.

The steering group will discuss and review evidence and emerging draft proposals around this work. It will advise our Executive Board, and help shape any options before we submit them to our Council for consideration.

The group includes key stakeholders from across the UK, including representatives from the four CNO and CMO (Chief Midwifery Officer) offices, professional education bodies, approved education institutions (AEIs) practice learning partners (PLPs), employers, representative bodies, members of the public, students, and unions.

The group met for the first time on 3 June 2024.

As the CNO for Scotland, and former Executive Director for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Healthcare Professionals in NHS Lothian, Alex will bring considerable knowledge and experience to his position as independent Chair. Other notable roles include his work on the Scottish Government’s Nursing and Midwifery Taskforce, and involvement in key policy areas, including infection prevention control.

Public advisory group

It’s vital that we hear from the public and people who use services. We have a standing public advisory group, whose co-host will also be a member of the independent steering group. This group comprises both members of the public with lived experience of being cared for by advanced practitioners; and representatives of charities and advocacy organisations representing those people.

The group met for the first time on 3 July 2024.

Student advisory group

It’s also vital that we hear from students about their practice learning experiences. Our student advisory includes students and recent graduates on nursing, midwifery and nursing associate courses. It includes nurse apprentice students and representatives from all four fields of nursing and all four countries of the UK.

The group met for the first time on 25 July 2024.
