New OSCE test centre open to thousands of candidates each year

Published on 28 March 2022

Internationally trained professionals and those returning to practice can now take their Objective Structured Clinical Examination test in Newcastle. The newest test site opened today at Northumbria University, and can accommodate up to 7,000 candidates each year.

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is part of our Test of Competence (ToC), which we use to assess the skills and knowledge of people applying to join our register from overseas, or rejoin our register after a long period away from practice.

Northumbria University joins Oxford Brookes University, the University of Northampton and Ulster University as OSCE test centre partners. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will also open a new test centre in the spring, giving candidates even more choice about where to take their test.

Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Executive and Registrar at the NMC, said:

“I’m delighted that our new OSCE test centre in Newcastle is up and running, helping to create additional capacity that gives people more choice over where to take their test. We’ve worked closely with the Northumbria partnership to make this happen. It will help thousands more professionals with the right skills and knowledge to join our register quickly and safely, for the benefit of people using health and care services.”

Notes

The NMC uses the Test of Competence (ToC) to assess the skills and knowledge of people applying to join our register from overseas or rejoin our register after a long period away from practice. Each Test of Competence is split into two parts – a multiple-choice computer based test known as the CBT, and a practical test known as the OSCE.

Further information about the Test of Competence and the OSCE can be found on our website.
