Honorary awards are presented to foreign nationals recommended by the foreign secretary. Margaret, a dual registered midwife and nurse from County Tipperary in Ireland, was Executive Nurse Director at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, before retiring in March 2022. In this role, she was accountable for the professional leadership of around 16,000 registered midwives and nurses, as well as other health professionals. Prior to that, Margaret held the same position at NHS Tayside.

Margaret was appointed to the Council in May last year and is the designated Council member for Scotland.

NMC Chair, Sir David Warren said:

“I am delighted that Margaret’s invaluable contribution to the NHS has been recognised in this way.

“As well as being an instrumental leader for thousands of nurses and midwives caring for the people of Scotland, Margaret’s insight has been crucial to the Council’s discussions and decisions since she joined us last May. I know that all Margaret’s Council colleagues will join me in congratulating her on this well-deserved honour.”

On gaining her Honorary OBE, Margaret said:

“As a proud and passionate nurse and midwife, I am both thankful and humbled to be awarded this Honour.

“I have always believed that we should care for people like we would a loved one and am fortunate to have worked and learned with colleagues who shared similar values.”
