NMC launches recruitment campaign for Interim Chief Executive and Registrar

Published on 02 August 2024

We have today (2 August 2024) launched the recruitment campaign for an Interim Chief Executive and Registrar.

We’re looking for an Interim Chief Executive who can help us to start the process of change, following the publication of the People and Culture review by Nazir Afzal and Rise Associates. This found that there are colleagues who have experienced racism and other forms of discrimination, as well as bullying and harassment. It was also clear about the link between regulatory performance and our culture.

We have accepted all 36 of the report’s recommendations and are determined that this will be a turning point for our organisation.

This will be a complex leadership challenge, but it is also an opportunity to have a significant impact on the NMC as we set our organisation on the road to recovery. The Interim Chief Executive and Registrar will oversee a programme of work that will improve the NMC’s culture and ensure a clear focus on our primary purpose – to protect the public.

We have reflected on the previous recruitment process, and have appointed equality, diversity and inclusion specialists Inclusive Boards to help us with this search. Employee and stakeholder involvement will form part of the process - including engagement with a stakeholder panel and a staff panel prior to the final panel interview.

A diverse panel consisting of three of our Council members and two independent panel members will select the successful candidate. We aim to appoint the right person by October.

The campaign for the permanent Chief Executive and Registrar will launch in September, with a view to announcing the permanent successor before the end of the year.
