NMC responds to CQC national maternity inspection report

Published on 19 September 2024

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a report following its recent review of hospital maternity locations in England that had not been inspected and rated since March 2021.

It highlights common areas of concern that impact the quality of care for women and babies at some hospitals.

Commenting on the report, Tracey MacCormack, Assistant Director for Midwifery at the NMC, said:

“We welcome today’s report and its call for collective action to ensure all women and babies receive the best possible care. Every woman deserves to feel confident that they will be listened to and receive safe, compassionate, and person-centred care from their midwife.

“Our Code and standards are there to support midwives to practise safely and effectively and are reviewed as new evidence arises. This includes working within their scope of competence, communicating clearly, and working in partnership with women to maintain positive relationships.

“However, as the report highlights, well publicised staffing pressures can affect the quality of care that midwives are able to provide. It is vital midwives have the right resources and continuing professional development opportunities, so they can regularly develop their knowledge and skills for the benefit of women and babies.”
