NMC seeks new Council and committee members as it looks to transform its culture

Published on 10 September 2024

The NMC is seeking a registered nurse, midwife or nursing associate to join our Council as a non-executive member from April 2025. We are also looking for three lay people to join our Council’s Committees.

As the governing body, the Council sets the NMC’s strategic direction. It’s made up of six lay members and six professionals on our register, appointed by the Privy Council, including at least one from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Council member

We are looking for a professional on our register from across the UK with senior level experience in leading or managing culture change and/or organisational development.

We are particularly keen to hear from those who can also bring skills in areas such as leading on policy and practice in safeguarding and protecting people; or senior leadership in higher education; or senior leadership in community based nursing services or social care.

The successful applicant will join at a turning point for the NMC as we address the concerns identified in the recent independent review of our culture and make significant investments in fitness to practise to improve the timeliness and quality of our decision-making.

We welcome applications from all backgrounds and strongly encourage applicants from Black and minority ethnic communities. We want our Council to better reflect the professions we regulate, and the people they care for.

Committees of Council

The Council’s decisions are informed by its Committees, which explore issues in greater depth and report back on their findings. They provide additional scrutiny and challenge that is critical to delivering our strategic aims.

We are looking for one lay person with senior expertise in organisational development to join our People and Culture Committee.

We are also looking for two lay people with either appropriate financial expertise or expertise in technology and cyber security to join our Audit Committee.

Sir David Warren, Chair of the Council, said:

“This is a pivotal time for our Council, as the NMC delivers a culture transformation programme addressing the concerns raised in the recent independent review of our people and culture. Our new Council and Committee members will play a key role in ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of the review’s recommendations, bringing valuable expertise in organisational development and cultural change.

“The Council is determined to improve the NMC’s effectiveness as a regulator and is focused on ensuring it becomes a learning organisation that is person-centred and fit for the future. We’re committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all colleagues are supported to thrive. We’re also making significant investments in fitness to practise so we can make decisions that keep people safe in a more timely and considerate way, for the benefit of the public and the professionals on our register.

“To do this, it’s crucial our Council and Committees better reflect the diversity of the professionals on our register, and the public we’re here to serve. We encourage people from Black and minority ethnic communities to apply.”
