Whistleblowing disclosures: The action we took in 2023-24

The annual joint whistleblowing disclosures report has been released today (30 September) as part of a collaborative initiative with eight other regulators. This aims to highlight how, together as partners, we are addressing serious concerns raised by health and care professionals in the UK.

In 2023-24, we took 225 forms of action after receiving and assessing 149 whistleblowing disclosures. Among these disclosures, we referred 91 to other regulators, so they could take action. This compares to 137 disclosures that we received in the previous year, including 47 onward referrals. None of the disclosures relate to concerns about the NMC and its internal culture.

The most common themes of these disclosures were: management issues; patient care; health and safety; dishonesty; communication issues; prescribing and medicines management; behaviour or violence.

Commenting on the report, Kuljit Dhillon, Interim Executive Director of Strategy and Insight at the NMC, said:

"To protect health and care professionals, and for the safety of the public, it's paramount that people feel empowered to speak up about any concerns they have. Equally important is ensuring those concerns are heard, with confidence that appropriate action will follow.

“As today’s report shows, we’re committed to addressing concerns received through whistleblowing disclosures seriously. We’re grateful to those who’ve come forward - we urge any nurse, midwife or nursing associate to reach out if they need support.”
