Immediate actions following extraordinary review
6 October 2014
The evidence which was collected during the extraordinary review in Guernsey indicates serious concerns with the quality of supervision of midwives and the practice of midwifery on the Island.
This clearly could have an impact on the safety of the maternity services on the Island. Guernsey’s Health and Social Services Department has committed to take swift steps to mitigate against any possible risks to patients and the public.
The NMC’s report on the review’s findings will be published towards the end of October.

Notes for editors
1. The Nursing and Midwifery Council exists to protect the public. We do this by ensuring that only those who meet our requirements are allowed to practise as a nurse or midwife in the UK. We take action if concerns are raised about whether a nurse or midwife is fit to practise.
2. The review will focus on compliance with the Midwives rules and standards (2012) and will be conducted in line with our quality assurance framework.
