NMC publishes principles of preceptorship
22 July 2020
Geraldine Walters, Director of Professional Practice for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) said:
“We know that the transition from student to professional can be a time of both excitement and challenge, as these new professionals begin to put their skills and knowledge into practise.
“We’ve seen many great examples of organisations across the UK who support newly qualified staff through tailored preceptorship programmes that help them to grow their confidence and set the foundation for a lifelong journey of reflection and professional development.
“Our principles bring together these common characteristics that the successful preceptorship programmes today have. We hope they will support all employers to develop programmes that set their newly registered nurses, midwives and nursing associates up for success.”
“We have developed these principles in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officers, the Chief Midwifery Officer in England and Scotland and the Lead officers for midwifery in Northern Ireland and Wales and I look forward to seeing how they are used in the years to come.”
