The UK Government has reached a new agreement with Switzerland to recognise Swiss professional qualifications from 1 January 2025. This replaces the previous Swiss Citizens Rights Agreement that was in place from 2021 to 2024 and covers all people with Swiss qualifications rather than being specific to Swiss nationals.

If you trained in Switzerland, you could apply for registration via the ‘Trained outside UK’ route irrespective of your nationality.

Qualification evaluation and recognition

If you have a qualification from Switzerland that allows you to practice as a nurse responsible for general care (known as an adult nurse in the UK) or midwife and meets the EU requirements for automatic recognition, you’ll be able to have your qualification recognised by us. We'll evaluate your qualification initially to determine eligibility and you may not need to take NMC Test of Competence.

If your qualification does not meet the requirements of automatic recognition, you’ll need to do our Test of Competence. Please refer to Test of Competence 2021 - The Nursing and Midwifery Council to find out more information.

Swiss nationals with non-Swiss qualifications

If you are a Swiss national who holds a qualification from another EU or EEA country you may be able to have this qualification recognised in line with our existing agreements covering qualifications from these countries. Please check if your qualification title and start date is on the list of European qualifications that meet the requirements for automatic recognition.
