Once you're on our register, you can apply to add another nursing, midwifery or nursing associate qualification to your existing registration. This is known as subsequent registration.
This guide is for people who want to add a qualification gained outside the UK. The steps are similar to our process for initial registration.
There's a different process if you want to register another qualification gained in the UK.
How to apply
You should read this guide in full to understand the evidence you need to support your application before you begin.
Once you're ready, you can begin your application in your NMC Online account.
- Log in to your NMC Online account
- Select ‘Add an Overseas Qualification’ from the 'My registration' menu
Then follow the steps to begin your application and submit your evidence.
Who can apply
To add a qualification that you gained outside the UK you must have:
- an active NMC registration
- an NMC Online account or be able to create one using your Pin number
- a qualification that would allow you to register in your country of training.
If you didn't register the qualification in your country of training, but were able to use the qualification to register in another country please contact us before applying.
Types of qualifications you can add
You can apply to add another nursing, midwifery or nursing associate qualification to your existing registration record.
For example, if you're currently on our register as a registered adult nurse, you could add a children’s nursing qualification.
You cannot add clinical specialisms such as neonatal nursing, cancer nursing or critical care nursing though.
You also cannot use the same qualification you used before to join a different part of our register. You need to have completed another course that would allow you to register in your country of training.
If you did a combined programme, please contact us before applying.
Choosing a field of nursing
If you're adding a nursing qualification, we'll ask you to choose the relevant field of nursing.
Your qualification doesn’t need to be specific to the field of nursing you are applying to, but you’ll need to complete the specific Test of Competence to show you have the relevant knowledge and skills for the field you choose.
Your qualification must be different to the one you used before to join another part of our register.
