Pre-2019 Standards of proficiency for nurse and midwife prescribers
Pre-2019 standards still being used by programmes across the UK
The standards of proficiency for nurse and midwife prescribers (2006) were replaced by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Competency Framework for all Prescribers on 28 January 2019.
The competency framework and our new standards for prescribing programmes now set out the requirements for NMC-approved prescribing programmes and the competencies required for safe and effective prescribing practice.

We’ve kept the 2006 standards and circulars that underpin them available on our website for education and research reference purposes only.
Nurse and midwife prescribers must not use these to inform their ongoing prescribing practice. They must refer to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Competency Framework and other relevant sources of information and guidance instead for this purpose.
